My friend Brett came up with the title of this post when I responded to his tweet about writing being what he’s meant to do. I said that I’d had to quit my job because of breathing issues and that healing work was my ‘meant to do’.
I spent all day yesterday reading, researching, and rebooting my dream. I reread things I’d saved on my Kindle by Theresa Reed and Sarah Von Bargen. I came across a subscription gift by Esme Wang about using a productivity journal (aka a Bullet Journal). I was busy, busy, busy!
And then this morning I started my day by sending healing light…it begins!
“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”
I wish I could remember where I found that. It’s my new mantra. I tend to be a bit ‘Oooh, shiny things’, and lose focus; hopefully this will keep me from doing that. 🙂

A year or so ago, I tried out bullet journaling (bujo for short), but it was too chaotic, disorganized and repetitive, so I went back to my Filofax. And, in the manner of many planner users, that hasn’t quite fit the bill, either. The rings are in the way, I carry around a ton of stuff that I never use or look at…I love, love, love my Malden, but…I need to try something else.
I don’t remember what led me to bujo videos on youtube the other day, but I was quickly caught up in them and decided to give the system another try.
I had a nice hardcover notebook on hand, which I wouldn’t normally use except that this one lays flat when open. I wrote my key (which is still undergoing changes) and a little “if you find this” note and taped them inside the front cover.
My last bujo’s index was a mess. I wrote dang near everything there, because if I want to find something, I want to be able to find it NOW. As a result, it was insane, and part of why I decided to drop this system. This time it will be a bit more general, but in a way, hopefully, that I’ll still have a sense of where to look for a particular entry.
I’m too lazy to write little calendars for the year-at-a-glance, and I just happened to have one of those little calendars that insurance companies will give you, and I cut the tiny ‘month before and after’ ones and taped them in. Easy-peasy. 🙂
I found the weekly set-up in a video (sorry, I don’t remember which one), and as I prefer a weekly view, gave it a shot. I already know that it’s not big enough, so next week will be a week-on-two-pages setup. Otherwise I’ll end up with tons of notes elsewhere, and I really don’t want that. I’m also trying out trackers, but I don’t know if I’ll stick with them. I’ve also made some mistakes, as you can see, and the perfectionist in me has managed not to freak out and start all over…go, me!
After the weekly page I have a sort of daily setup, where I’m writing notes. When I go to the 2-page setup, I may drop that. Or do more of a brain dump section. I’m not sure yet.
I just started using a bujo over the weekend, so I’m curious to see how I tweak it and how it ends up working for me. Fingers crossed!
PS: update on the marmot. All 4 of her paws were burnt. 😦 It seems that when people go camping in northern NM and CO, marmots crawl up under the hood and when the vehicle is started, they are too scared to move and end up riding under there til the car stops. Ouch! They healed her paws and drove her to northern NM and released her into a family of marmots. It’s not hers, but at least she’ll have an easy time fitting in; if she was male, territory issues would cause problems. So she’s ok!!! #happydance
After almost 2 months of using a Bullet Journal, I’ve come to the conclusion that it just wasn’t doing it for me. I love that you can tweak the original concept to make it yours in every way, but even when I streamlined it a bit, it still wasn’t cutting it. More than anything else, I discovered that I really, really need a weekly view, and while, yes, I could draw one into the BuJo by hand, I would then be creating a yearly, monthly, weekly, AND daily set-up in it. Redundant and overkill. Plus, lots of use of a ruler.

Week on one page!
So the other day I moved back into my beloved Malden (seriously, it feels like butter; I can’t stop holding it), and mucked around with its set-up til it worked for me. Also, hell, no, I did not pay that much for mine. Amazon FTW!
Anyway. Right off, when you open it, Hello, Kitty! greets you. I’m not even a Hello, Kitty! fan, but it’s cute, and it’s a sticky pad. 🙂 Section one has my unused pages from the end of last year, placed in upside down so I don’t forget that they aren’t actually the dailies for this year (that would so be something I would do), to be used as scribble paper.
Section two has the pages for actual lists that I want to keep, and section 3 has the week-on-two-pages for 2016 (I keep them at the back so there is a cushion between the left-hand pages and the front of the Filofax to make writing easier). That calendar came with the Malden, and it isn’t my favorite, but the Page-per-Day (the ones that are scribble paper now), while having a lot of room, didn’t help with my need for a weekly view.
I checked out the Filofax site today, and, Lo!, look what I found!!!! I didn’t even know there was such a thing!!! In the “week on one page” picture above, you can see how I drew the lines that correspond to the ones in the week-on-one-page picture in the link, and the size of each day is totally doable, because the next page is…a note page!!! I can see my week at a glance, AND have room for notes! I’m going to order it ASAP!!
As for the BuJo, I may still use some of the signifiers (like task, event, note, appointment), but nothing else. I gave it a try, but it just didn’t call to me as a permanent thing in the end, and I wish all who love the idea to pieces much happiness with it. If you’re curious about BuJos, there’s a community on G+, lots of youtube videos, lots and lots of pictures on Instagram…and probably some on FB, too.
Last month, after attempting to use my Malden as a Bullet Journal, I pulled out an old notebook I had and created my first true BuJo.
I set it up in the traditional way that Ryder Carroll shows on his website, and went at it. I loved having everything together in one notebook, but as the month went on, I started to notice some aspects that I wasn’t happy with, such as the dailies being interspersed with collections and other things, and I didn’t like having to go to the Index to find them. I also found that I really need a visual calendar, and my Future Log wasn’t working, either.
So last night I set up July, but knew I wouldn’t be happy with it, so I played with different hacks I found online (the BuJo community across social media is just as, if not maybe larger now, than the Filofax one!), and then set it up. On the left is what is known as the “Alaister Method“, which I set up on two pages (or a spread, as Ryder calls it), and I’ve already filled one page! On the right is the traditional way.

The key to my signifiers. I’ve borrowed ideas from other BuJo users, and came up with some that work best for me. Aside, I never refer to the date that someone died on as an “anniversary”, always a “memorial”.
I took this from my Filofax and taped it to the very first page. SO helpful for me!!
I came up with more ways to utilize my personal BuJo better (for instance, I don’t use weekly spreads as many others do), and the index will, as a result, have less of a “collections” focus, and more of a “where info re: this particular thing” is.
I use the # symbol to show that an item is included in the index (for instance, keeping track of dr appts).
I’m very pleased with how I have it set up right now, and over the next month I will be paying attention to what works and what doesn’t. Once I finally nail down a system that I really like, I will purchase one of these gorgeous Leuchtturm1917 A5 hardcover notebooks from JB Welly. It will most likely be the purple one (swoon!) and with the Graph version instead of the dots; lines work best for me. 😉
Oh, the “sobriety” signifier…I added that because today begins the 100 Day (alcohol-free) Challenge. Woohooo! As a matter of fact, that upside down package in the picture of “BuJo-less” is the tea I’m drinking today. #makeminetea
It’s been a while since I did a post about using my Filofax – in this case my Personal Fusion, and I came across a post on G+ today by Becky of Becky’s Paper Route which has me writing about it again.
I’ve been using a Filofax for a while, and currently have 3. The Personal is the one I carry with me to use on a daily basis, but as you can see, I’ve been seriously under-using it.
Some days DO have notes, but again, nothing extensive (excuse the #essentialtremor blurred picture). Granted, there are days that have more written down, but overall not many.
I even have a year planner, and not one thing noted on it. Planning is not my strong suit, especially for an entire year!
After reading Becky’s post and watching the Bullet Journal vid again, I restructured the bullet icons I was using (I tore up the key I had written, or I’d show you how ridiculous it was), and now it’s not only simpler, but more in tune with what I really need to note.
I’m also going to implement the monthly calendar and monthly task list, something I’ve not used one bit. I think more planning would probably help me, don’t you? 😉 I’ll do an update in a month or so and let you know how it’s going. I’m also using my beloved A5 Chameleon for my healing work, and I’m about to go set up a bullet system for that one, too.
